North Carolina Criminal History cannot retrieve official criminal records, perform an official background check, change or remove an agency record, or receive an expunction filing. Those services must come directly from the responsible state, court, or county custodian.
Need an Official Record?
Use the source that created or maintains the requested North Carolina record:
- Court case files: review North Carolina criminal court case records, then request documents or certification from the Clerk of Superior Court in the filing county
- Fingerprint-based personal criminal history: use the Right to Review process from the NC SBI Criminal Information and Identification Section
- State custody or supervision: search the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Offender Public Information Search for state prisoners, probationers, and parolees
- Police and incident reports: ask the police department, sheriff, Highway Patrol, or other law-enforcement agency that created the report
- Expunction: use the matching North Carolina Judicial Branch form and file through the Clerk of Superior Court in the county of charge or conviction
- County-held records: route sheriff bookings, local jail data, and county case documents through the North Carolina county directory
NC SBI does not provide a general public walk-in counter or public name-search portal for its fingerprint repository.
